Fully plastic piping to safeguard drinking water from toxic chemicals

The challenge
As cities and populations grow, there is a need to reclaim lands previously deemed unfit for universal public and private use. There is, especially in former industrial sites, a risk that the landmass contains toxins that can infiltrate ordinary pipes. The risk is not exclusive to these sites – even existing built areas may face challenges. The consequences can be particularly drastic when it comes to potable water.

Conventional solutions
The conventional solution for potable water in contamination risk areas has been to furnish fresh water for the sites by laying either cast iron or concrete piping. Alternatively, barrier pipes enforced with an aluminium layer have been used.  Our customers gave us feedback that plastic pipes would be preferable, but there were concerns that TCE could have a harmful impact to the aluminium barrier layer over time. Furthermore, aluminium enforced pipes are not easy to recycle.

Think Plus
We set out to create a solution which incorporates the ease and flexibility of plastic piping with the resilience and security against contaminants of cast iron pipes. Plus stands for, not just the polymer barrier layer that protects the water from the toxins, but also for the features that make it so much easier to work with than conventional solutions.  It brings plus possibilities as a cost-efficient, easy to install, ultimately reliable and long-lasting solution. It not only mitigates the risks involved in building on potentially contaminated land, but also protects the water supply from future risks, such as chemical spills or other accidents above ground.
It is also a plus for the environment, as it is fully recyclable.
